The beginning of the year often motivates us to hit the reset button. It’s a new year, so why wouldn’t you feel the urge to find a “new you?” But before you make any drastic changes, take a step back and think about why exactly you feel the need to reset. What was dragging you down last year, if anything?

None of us are perfect, but maybe you don’t need to make a drastic change to feel refreshed. Think about the positive things you accomplished this year and how you can create more of those pat-yourself-on-the-back moments.

Self-awareness is a major factor to consider when choosing a path for the new year. So no matter if you’re looking for a whole new you, or if you just want to build upon who you’ve become, here are a few healthy New Year’s resolutions for a happier ‘you’ in 2023.

Treat Yourself to a Digital Detox

In the world we live in, we are constantly looking at a screen. Sometimes we’re looking at more than one at a time. This impacts our sleep, our ability to focus on a single task, and more importantly, it keeps us from living in the present.

Try ridding yourself of anything digital for a day, a week or longer if you can swing it. You’d be surprised by the difference this can make on your mindset, friendships and even your career in the long run.

If you’re scared to take the plunge alone, test this out at the dinner table with a group of friends. Put all of your phones in a covered bowl at the center of the table. Whoever reaches for their phone first buys dinner!

Surround Yourself with Nature

Forest Bathing’ and spending time in nature today drives us to a more focused and balanced tomorrow. Our team at Arbor is constantly inspired by the beauty and simplicity of the great outdoors, and we believe that after a stressful day, fresh air is the best medicine.

However, going on a hike or camping in the mountains isn’t the only way to reap the benefits of being close to nature. Surrounding yourself with greenery is proven to reduce stress levels and improve your overall mood.

Studies show that indoor plants improve concentration and productivity by up to 15 percent! Plus, different plants have varying benefits. For example, plants with broad leaves help regulate humidity and increase levels of positivity. Succulents and orchids emit oxygen at night, promoting a better night’s sleep.

Experiment with Guided Meditations

If mindfulness is a priority for you this year, one healthy habit to incorporate into your daily routine is meditation. If this is new to you, we recommend starting with guided meditation, a type of meditation that’s verbally led by an instructor in person or through an audio file. Silent meditation isn’t always easy, as our thoughts and to-do’s for the day often take over our thoughts. Meditation takes lots and lots of practice. Headspace is a platform that offers a variety of guided meditations that you can customize based on what you’re trying to achieve. Try this every day for at least one month to see how it helps improve your overall state-of-mind.

As you can see, not all healthy New Year’s resolutions have to be focused on improving your diet or exercise regimen. Identifying simple ways to stable your mind at this hectic time of year, with so much change surrounding us, is possibly the best gift you can give yourself.
